Iberdrola builds the largest photovoltaic park in Italy in Sicily

The Iberdrola group has signed an agreement with IB Vogt for the construction of a photovoltaic project of 245 MW, called Fénix, in March in Sicily. This is the largest park under development in Italy. To date, only 60 photovoltaic systems on the national territory exceed 10 MW of capacity and the average is 26 MW

Another 60 MW could be added to the plant, bringing the total to 305 MW. When it comes into operation, with its 424,638 photovoltaic modules, the plant will generate around 400 GWh per year, providing enough clean energy to cover the needs of over 140,000 homes and avoiding the emission of 119 thousand tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. Furthermore, it is expected to create direct local employment for approximately 500 workers during the construction phase and more than 100 stable jobs during the commercial operation phase.

Target 400 MW

In 2022, Iberdrola put its first 23 MW photovoltaic plant into operation in Italy in Montalto di Castro, Lazio. In the same region, in 2023 the company completed its second 7 MW solar plant in Montefiascone and began construction of another 32 MW solar plant in Tarquinia.

In addition to the Fenix ​​project, two other solar plants, Limes 10 and Limes 15, of 18 MW and 36 MW respectively, will begin construction in the first half of 2024, while three other projects are scheduled for the second half of the year and already have all necessary authorizations. In total, the Spanish multinational will have 330 MW under construction in Italy by 2024 and another 40 MW at the beginning of 2025, reaching an installed capacity of 400 MW.

«These are the steps already taken. But Iberdrola’s growth in Italy does not stop”, commented Valerio Faccenda, country manager of Iberdrola Renovables in Italy, who underlines how the company “has undoubtedly laid solid foundations for the achievement of the 2030 and 2035 objectives, with a portfolio of 100 renewable % of over 115 wind, photovoltaic and storage projects in an advanced stage of development for a total capacity of 5 GW.”
