Energy storage, Acl Energy joint venture with Bw Ess and Penso Power

Acl Energy, a Milan-based company specialized in the development of battery energy storage systems, has signed a strategic joint venture partnership with BW ESS and Penso Power, respectively leading companies in the energy storage sector at a global level and developer, owner and grid-scale energy storage asset manager with operations in the UK and Australia. This alliance marks a turning point for the Italian energy storage market, projecting the country into a prominent position in the European renewable energy panorama.

The joint venture involves the sharing of resources and expertise for the development of three innovative projects in Italy, with an overall connection capacity of 395 MW. Two of these, one of 111 MW in Lombardy and the other of 97 MW in Puglia, have already been submitted to the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Safety (MASE) for approval. A third 187 MW project in Piedmont is scheduled to be unveiled by the summer. These projects represent a significant step forward towards strengthening the Italian energy infrastructure, in line with Terna’s estimates which indicate Italy’s need for approximately 27 GW of energy storage capacity by 2033 to integrate over 120 GW of generation renewable energy foreseen in the Italian grid.

Richard Thwaites, CEO of Penso Power, confirmed the importance of the Italian market for his company and the effectiveness of the synergy between the skills of the three companies in the field of energy storage.

The current energy storage scenario in Italy shows promising growth, with 386,039 distributed storage systems installed particularly in the residential sector, for a total power of 3,045 MW and a maximum capacity of 4,893 MWh. Lombardy leads the regional ranking in terms of number of installations, followed by Veneto and Emilia-Romagna.
