The historic Technisub factory in Genoa closes. Or at least this is the objective of the French group that controls the brand and which intends to move the entire production to England. Obviously, the 45 workers who work on the site in the Ligurian capital are in a state of agitation and to whom, Fiom Cgil reports, the announcement was made “through a video conference with company top management”.
Tchnisub, which produces diving equipment, was founded in 1962 by Luigi Ferraro, gold medal for military valor in the Second World War, by virtue of his underwater actions. However, the company has long been controlled by the Aqualung group, which in turn was born thanks to a great figure: Jacques-Ives Cousteau, who partnered with Emile Gagnan.
Progressive cessation of activities
The group, in these hours, announced with a note «the progressive cessation of its production activities conducted at the Technisub plant in Genoa», underlining that, in recent years, Aqualung «has had to face significant challenges which have heavily affected its flows of cash”. And «as part of its transformation, the group has taken measures to reduce fixed costs and restore its long-term sustainable growth thanks to a more flexible and efficient organization».
In short, in the end «he decided to transfer the activities of the Italian headquarters, the means of production and the know-how to his production plant in Blackburn, England. This transfer – continues the note – will allow the group to centralize high value-added production, in particular around plastic and silicone injection, and thus create a “superstructure” that will rationalize production and optimize the use of resources. The aim is to finalize installation and start production at the Blackburn site in early 2025.”
Final closure by March 2025
The Genoa headquarters, the company note further states, «mainly produces masks, fins and snorkels» and «has been operating for several years at a very low level of activity, compared to its ideal production capacity. This low level of activity derives from the fierce competition from Asian manufacturers and from the strategic reorganization of the group which focuses mainly on products for diving and the military segment. The measures implemented to reduce its effects, such as the use of layoffs and the insourcing of supplier production, were not enough to restore profitability.”
