MSC Cruises is the first company to call in China post-pandemic

2 min read

MSC is the first international cruise company to resume sailing operations in China with regular calls after the pandemic. The ship MSC Bellissima made its first call in Shanghai, which will be followed by MSC Splendida. And the company confirmed the 2024-25 winter schedule in China.

Chef on board to celebrate

To celebrate its first port of call in Shanghai, the group organized a special event, right on board Bellissima: it invited government officials, travel agents, media and partners on the ship, for which the chefs Enrico & Roberto Cerea, of the restaurant At Vittorio’s, they prepared a special menu for the ceremony and the maiden voyage.

Bellissima will have Shanghai, Keelung and Shenzhen as its homeport throughout the summer of 2024 and will then return to Shanghai in January 2025. Splendida, however, will depart from Shenzhen and Xiamen from December 2024 until April 2025. MSC is, therefore, the only company international cruise company deploying two ships to four major ports within first year of return to the region.

«Strategic China»

«Bellissima’s first port of call in Shanghai – states Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises – reaffirms our commitment to a market that continues to play a strategic role for us. We are fulfilling our commitment to bring a modern flagship to the region and are ready to invest further in China, contributing to supporting the local economy. We want to promote the high-quality development of the cruise industry in the region, promote the cultural tourism industry and related markets.”

Both Bellissima and Splendida are equipped with the necessary technology to be able to use shore power (cold ironing), which means that ships can turn off their engines when docked in port, thus reducing emissions.
