More time for Venetians – private individuals and businesses – damaged by the Aqua granda of 12 November 2019, the last exceptional event before the Mose came into operation. The level of 187 cm reached that night (value recorded by Punta Salute’s CPSM instrument) represents the second highest level since 1872, the year records began, and had brought the city to its knees just before the start of the pandemic.
The mayor of the Municipality of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, has ordered the extension to 10 April 2024 for the completion of the procedures for requesting letter refunds (remaining in the queue because they are subject to a different liquidation procedure), initially set for 29 February 2024. The decision is linked to the high number of accesses to the IT platform and the requests for clarification received by the Support Structure activated by the Municipality of Venice. Other contributions have already been paid, now we move on to the final phase for which we had to wait for coverage: this phase concerns approximately 1,200 requests (903 requests from private individuals and 319 from companies) which can be processed for over 33 million.
The images of the Aqua granda had traveled around the world. The event was due to a superposition of four phenomena: the peak of the astronomical syzygy tide; the unusually high average sea level in the Adriatic; the strong Scirocco wind along the Adriatic basin and last but not least the passage of a small cyclone in the Northern Adriatic and the Venice lagoon which had caused local winds with gusts of over 100 km/h. It was just the tip of the iceberg of an exceptional November: in just one week, between 12 and 17 November 2019, the tide exceeded the level of 140 cm four times, thus recording levels that are among the highest 20 of the last 150 years. Throughout 2019, the sea level exceeded 110 cm 28 times, a level at which 12% of the city of Venice floods, with a total stay of around 50 hours in the month of November alone.
