White household appliances, in crisis in demand, are focusing on eco-scrapping

Weakened by a double drop in sales of 5% in the last two years and by a 2024 that opened with a new slowdown, but this time in double digits, the Italian white wine supply chain is looking for a new balance. An ecobonus for scrapping old and inefficient washing machines and refrigerators could help, but it is certainly not enough, given that the difficult scenario has characteristics that project it beyond the contingent emergency.

The main manufacturers active on the domestic market – such as the Swedish Electrolux, the American Whirlpool or the Chinese Haier – do not hide their problems, both in Italy and in Europe, and the components supply chain is also suffering. The Government is observing the situation closely, and in recent days it has convened the first meeting of the sector table, from which the players in the system hope the solution (or solutions) will emerge to give the industry a new future.

«The table has been defined as permanent – explains Paolo Lioy, president of Applia Italia, the sector’s reference association -, and this is already good news, because it means that the Government has understood that the issue of white must be placed at the center of the debate on the industrial future of the country; a future that will have to involve all of Europe, because most of the decisions related to the future of the industry now need to be coordinated from a continental perspective.”

Two addresses on the table. The first, as mentioned, is the ecobonus, which «responds to an immediate need for market reaction and is intended to stimulate demand – explains Lioy -. We are not talking about an inefficient incentive, we have been raising this issue for at least two years and we are convinced that the measure can have concrete consequences on an environmental level: the average age of the Italian installed fleet is among the highest in Europe, around 14 years , and the replacement of old appliances with new, more efficient ones would save costs for consumers and consumption for the country.”

The technicalities provide for the facilitation for the purchase of household appliances equipped with the new energy label, in force from March 2021 (refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and dishwashers), belonging to the highest energy classes, which can be benefited by simultaneously scrapping a similar household appliance with more 10 years old; the producers aim to replace around 2.5 million pieces, with a 30% discount on the purchase price (up to an amount of 200 euros or 100 for ISEE incomes exceeding 25 thousand euros) supported by an annual fund, created to hoc, of approximately 300 million euros.
