Tele-ultrasound, the Apulian platform Predict

Eliminate distances and “unite”, through holograms, geographically distant users who collaborate on complex scenarios and share skills. This happens in Optip, the tele-ultrasound platform developed by Predict of Bari, a company that operates in the healthcare, telemedicine, holo-presence and artificial intelligence platforms sectors.

Optip has multiple application scenarios: from interventions in the operating room to tele-ultrasound, from emergency-urgency contexts to innovative teaching. For the Predict researchers, who have been working on it since 2017, Optip is the result of the expertise acquired on the different hardware technologies of Ar (Augmented reality), Vr (Virtual reality) and Mr (Mixed reality) and allows you to optimize the outcome of the tele -ultrasound especially in cases of urgency-emergency, to manage the collaboration between doctors of various specializations in the hospital or at the patient’s home, thanks to the possibility of remotely following, in real time, both the examination performed by the doctor in the field, taken by the viewer’s camera, which streams the diagnostic image of the hospital ultrasound machine to which the platform is connected.

Optip is installed in the Internal Medicine department of the Bari Polyclinic, the first institute in the public sector to equip it, and allows multiple departments to communicate. «This platform – explains Angelo Vacca, director of Internal Medicine at the Polyclinic – has demonstrated significant potential and its implementation in the department can well support the hospital staff and doctors in specialist training in care and outpatient activities aimed at the patient, and speed up both diagnosis and therapy with clear benefit for patients.” The Bari-based company – founded by Angelo Gigante, an electronic engineer – has also developed Aphel, an artificial intelligence platform that integrates robots to support patients and healthcare personnel in repetitive or routine activities and accelerate the digitalisation of processes. In pediatric departments, and in particular in pediatric oncohematology departments, through the Aphel For Kids application, the robot becomes precious entertainment for children: it interacts with them thanks to various multisensory strategies, which also facilitate communication with those with brain disorders autism spectrum. At Predict they are also studying the way to use it in laboratory activities such as blood samples for neonatal screening for patients at the Giovanni XXIII pediatric hospital in Bari. The company – 30 employees and 2022 turnover of 5 million (+ 25% compared to to 2021) – is also studying, thanks to the work of a PhD student in Physics at the University of Bari, the possibility of creating an AI algorithm capable of distinguishing those who are healthy from those who are not. Today the distinction is 80/85%, but by increasing the numbers of samples obtained from breath analysis with the Mistral technology, developed by the Bari-based company, the distinction will be increasingly closer to 100%.
