Stellantis plant in Mirafiori: three-week layoff

2 min read

The news arrives during the meeting between the company and the unions. Stellantis announces the production stoppage of Mirafiori for three weeks, starting from February 12th, for the 2,260 body shop employees. Already in October the factory in the heart of Turin where the electric Fiat 500 and Maserati models are produced had stopped for two weeks. The company talks about the need to adapt the production flows of assembled cars to the transitory trend of market demand.

The market slows down, therefore, and Mirafiori closes in the very year in which the electric version of the Fiat 500 is destined to go overseas and arrive on the American market. Last year the production slowdown affected the last part of the year while during 2024 the pace slows down in the first quarter.

The metalworkers’ unions, who two weeks ago presented a shared initiative to draw attention to the delicate situation of the historic factory in Turin, have raised the alarm about the negative repercussions of this measure, starting with the wages of assembly line workers. “We will immediately take action to ask for a meeting with the company to understand why 2024 started in difficulty” reiterated the secretary of Uilm Luigi Paone.

The objective, Paone specified, «is to better manage the production stoppage of the body shop and find solutions capable of protecting the income of workers, such as their secondment to other realities of the Stellantis Group». For Edi Lazzi, secretary of the Fiom of Turin, «Mirafiori is in agony, it is necessary to give it oxygen with new productions».

In the foreground, therefore, is the issue of volumes for the Turin plant where Maseratis are produced alongside the Fiat 500 BEV. Last year, 85,940 units were produced, 9.3% less than in 2022. The Fiat 500 remained in line with 2022 production while Maserati brand production halved compared to the previous year with 8,680 units and 5 models (GT, GC, Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte). 2024 presents further critical issues due to the stop in production of the two historic models, Quattroporte and Ghibli, although in the face of the new electric version of Gran Turismo and Gran Cabrio.
