Pilot project for 5G for autonomous driving in Turin

Another step forward for the Smart City dossier of the City of Turin. The European Envelope project is underway which involves, among the industrial partners, the Teoresi Group, together with the Links Foundation, Tim, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Nextworks. Teoresi in particular will provide two prototypes of self-driving and connected cars, to test the platform that will be built as part of the project, based on 5G and 6G technologies. The two prototypes – modeled on the Xev YoYo – arise from the Group’s research activity and will be updated with new sensors developed to have in-depth knowledge of the surrounding environment.

«The project aims to develop new services connected to the 5G network, useful for applications related to autonomous and connected driving» explains Marco Bazzani Innovation manager of Teoresi. At the center of the pilot developed for the city of Turin is, on the one hand, the integration of different types of ADAS (advanced driving assistance systems) and on-board sensors, and on the other the integration of a control unit to be mounted on the prototypes for the collection and transmission of data.

The project is part of a group of 27 European initiatives that will develop in parallel, desired by the European Commission to stimulate research and development of new services linked to 5G and 6G technology, intended for various applications, including assisted driving.

«The objective – adds Bazzani – will be to implement a system capable, for example, of reconstructing, through a vast range of sensors, the dynamics of a possible accident, with the possibility of launching alerts to the municipal police or emergency vehicles, in case of injuries”.

Turin aims to become, for Italy, a real laboratory for new 5G and 6G technology solutions applied to self-driving and connected cars. LINKS Foundation, a point of reference for applied research and technology transfer, will be responsible for testing activities in Italy, alongside the Turin City Lab.
