Italmatch Chemicals expands into Latin America. The chemical group with headquarters in Genoa, specialized (among other things) in additives for water and plastics and in lubricants, has signed a definitive agreement for the purchase of the majority of the shares of Alcolina, a Brazilian company specialized in the treatment of water for bioethanol, in sugar production and in paints and paper.

Eighty employees and 35 million turnover

Founded 27 years ago, Alcolina today has two production sites in Brazil (in Cravinhos and Rio Lago), around 80 employees supported by a network of sales agents, a 2023 turnover of 35 million euros and has a highly complementary product portfolio to that of Italmatch.

«With this acquisition – explains Sergio Iorio, founder and CEO of Italmatch – the company strengthens its presence in the Latin American market, confirming and consolidating its growth and development strategy abroad. Italmatch has been active in Brazil since 2017, with the creation of the local branch Italmatch Do Brasil, followed by the acquisition of Sudamfos do Brasil”.

Lighthouse on brown sugar

More recently, continues Iorio, «the group signed a collaboration and licensing agreement for the development of a leading technology for the Latin American sugar market: SugarMaxx, which involves the use of chemical solutions in the process of stabilizing the color of cane sugar. We consider the Latin American market, which today represents around 5% of our turnover, as a market with great potential”.

With the acquisition of Alcolina, adds the entrepreneur, «we strengthen our portfolio of water products, becoming a leader in additives for industrial processes for “niche” but growing end markets, such as sugar and bioethanol. Alcolina will be able to benefit from the broad portfolio of our products for the water treatment market, as well as enhance its widespread distribution network in Latin America, focused on the sugar market.”
