IoT, the first Italian private constellation of pico-satellites is born

One small step for man, one big step for Italy. During the press conference held on November 29th at the headquarters of the foreign press in Milan, Apogee Space, an Italian pioneering company in the space sector, announced the release of the first batch of nine pico-satellites. An epochal step in the creation of the first Italian private constellation of satellites dedicated to telecommunications forInternet of Things (IoT).

The pico-satellites, successfully launched last November 11th via the Falcon 9 launcher SpaceX, were released by the Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) from Italy’s D-Orbit. An event that serves as a launching pad for Apogeo Space’s vision to offer global and frequent telecommunications coverage and a wide range of advanced services for different sectors, including forest and glacier monitoring, agri-tech, logistics, Oil & Gas . y

A decisive step for the Italian space economy

The milestone achieved by the company marks a decisive step forward for Italy in the space economy, strengthening the country’s position in the telecommunications and pico-satellite constellations sector. Rome, to date, stands as the third contributor in Europe of the European Space Agency after Paris and Berlin. «We have a complete supply chain, with the Vega launcher, which will soon return to orbit, and world excellence of the caliber of Leonardo. I am optimistic”, commented the engineer Guido ParissentiCEO and co-founder of Apogeo Space, on the sidelines of the presentation.

«We are proud and excited about the release of our first batch of satellites. It took years of planning and experimentation which, thanks to the support of the Primo Space fund, was able to find industrial concreteness. We look to the future with enthusiasm, with the aim of making an important contribution in the world of IoT telecommunications”, continued Parissenti.

The origins

The project has solid roots, starting from the successful launch of FEES (Flexible Experimental Embedded Satellite) in 2021, a precursor to the newly released pico-satellites. Later, in 2022, it was launched FEES2the smallest satellite ever released from the International Space Station.
