Fuorisalone 2024, over a thousand events expected in Milan. 130 for the Municipality’s announcement

3 min read

In the end, the events in the city during the Design Week (from 15 to 21 April 2024) will be around a thousand. A more or less stable number for some years now, and not because there is a lack of requests to plan more, but because the promoters of the Fuorisalone – as well as the organizers of the Salone del Mobile – have preferred in recent times, in particular after the pandemic, set stricter selection limits and focus on higher quality events.

The announcement from the Municipality of Milan

Precisely for this reason it is interesting to note that – despite the greater rigor of the selection criteria – the number of projects submitted to the usual tender by the Municipality of Milan, which will take place in municipal public spaces, has increased, and this year there were around 180, 5 % more than last year, by around 130 organizers. Events that add up to those organized by private entities in the various “districts” of the city, reaching (and perhaps exceeding) the thousand mark.

«This year we have explicitly added the obligation to organize activities that do not have commercial purposes, but only exhibition purposes – explains the Councilor for Economic Development, Fashion and Design of the Municipality, Alessia Cappello –. For the rest, the call is similar to that of previous years, with a great push towards projects that contribute to giving visibility to young designers, which have a focus on sustainability and the circular economy and which involve areas that are not central to the city” .

The design districts: the Sarpi area arrives

In fact, in recent years new “design districts” have gradually been added to the historic and consolidated ones – namely Brera, 5Vie, Tortona and Isola. The “youngest” districts are confirmed, such as Monumentale and Porta Venezia Design District, the latter born last year and which in 2023 had recorded over 40 thousand visitors. Among the new locations, via Sarpi and the Chinatown area, which connects to the Monumental Cemetery area, already involved in the Design Week last year. «It is an area that is developing a lot in the creative field, thanks also to the presence of entities such as the Fabbrica del Vapore and the Adi Design Museum», observes the councilor.

Furthermore, this year, for the first time the Fuorisalone will leave the metropolitan area in the strict sense to expand into the province of Monza and Brianza, at Villa Borsani in Varedo, which years ago had already hosted an event linked to design and which this year was chosen by Alcova for its review. Another novelty, in via Molise, will be the Fuorisalone festival, which will combine design with music.
