Einstein Telescope, Italian consortium for the feasibility study

Another step forward in the challenge for the Einstein Telescope. That is, the project to study gravitational waves in the tunnels of the abandoned Sos Enattos mine in Lula (in the province of Nuoro) thanks to the largest interferometer in the world.

Feasibility study for Italian companies

The news concerns the feasibility study which still remains in Italy. It will be prepared by the group of Italian companies that won the tender of the Pnrr Etic Project (Einstein Telescope Infrastructure Consortium). They will be led by Rocksoil spa which leads a consortium involving Leonardo European Consortium for engineering and architecture, Ferro Engineering srl, Criteria srl, Inar srl, Gdp Geomin srl, Geotec spa.

Italy competing against Limburg

«What the consortium has won with this tender – they underline from the Infn – is a task worth over 12 million euros -, the results of which will be fundamental for the Italian candidacy to host the future third generation underground detector for the research on gravitational waves in Europe”. Italy is currently competing with another site located in the Meuse-Rhine Euregio (on the border between Holland, Germany and Belgium).

The ideal site

The Sos Enattos mine is considered by experts to be «the best site in Europe and one of the best in the world for low seismic and environmental noise and for the nature of the rock». The challenges to be faced with the Einstein Telescope range from precision mechanics to metallurgy, continuing with seismic sensors, optics, quantum technologies and “the management of massive quantities of data with artificial intelligence”.

In-depth studies for 18 months

«Given the design complexity of the Einstein Telescope infrastructure and the stringent requirements imposed by the scientific community – underlines Gaetano Schillaci, sole manager of the procedure -, the study will have to investigate its many and different aspects; among these, the geology of the chosen area, the optimal location and depth of the observatory vertices”. Not only that, the manager then adds: «In both configurations investigated, triangle and double “L”, the excavation and construction techniques, the management of materials, the environmental impact and finally the costs. In the 18 months expected for the completion of the study we will also have continuous interaction with the Italian and international scientific community of Einstein Telescope.”
