A productive bet in wine now in its fourth generation

He returned home and to his origins to give new impetus to the family business and bring it to the milestone of 2 million bottles sold within a few years and thanks to investments. This is the goal of Federico De Cerchio, a young entrepreneur who, after graduating in Economics in Padua and a Master in Business & Administration in Sweden and after being among the founders of the online shop, on-wine, decided to return home to Villamagna (in province of Chieti) between the Maiella and the Gran Sasso but not far from the sea to take over and relaunch the family winery.

In fact, De Cerchio first bought out the shares of his uncle and two sisters in the company and then launched his own challenge by investing in the construction of a new cellar, the beating heart of a winery which aims to grow both from a productive and welcoming thanks to the Relais already active with 4 standard rooms and 2 suites and with a swimming pool set among the vineyards and surrounding mountains.

«2023 was already an excellent year – says De Cerchio -: we grew by 30%, totaling 4 million in turnover with 600 thousand bottles sold. The strong point of our business model is exports. In fact, we generate beyond borders, specifically in 40 countries, over 80% of our turnover. The main outlet markets are Canada, USA, Germany and South-East Asia. While in Italy our development will increasingly focus on hospitality which aims to intercept a portion of the ever-increasing tourist flows attracted by our country.”

The history of the company dates back to 1910 at the birth of Torre Zambra, the (then) small local winery on the hills of Villamagna today has become Famiglia De Cerchio, that is, an entrepreneurial reality now in its fourth generation and owner of 3 estates in Abruzzo (Torre Zambra ), Puglia (Pajaru) and Sicily (Peri Peri) for a total of 82 hectares cultivated according to the principles of organic farming. A production gamble considered an essential condition for the wine group which has made sustainability, as well as wines with great personality, a founding value that dominates every phase of production, from the vineyard to the cellar. De Cerchio’s production is today certified by ICEA (agronomic practices), by Agroqualità for Just Vegan and by the Equalitas standard with regards to sustainability.

«We aim to offer – adds De Cerchio – wines that are obviously good, but also modern, more drinkable and understandable for a public that is no longer looking for concentrations and angularity, but for elegance and immediacy. We need to get out of old patterns. Public taste changes quickly and I notice it every time I travel to the markets of other continents, but to win the challenge we must also invest in brand identity and perceived quality. In this sense, Abruzzo wine still has to make many steps forward.”
